For those intrigued by XML, the new standard that promises to fix many of HTML’s problems, there is a new site: xml.com. The site is already up, even though the official launch is May 1. There are already pieces by Tim Bray (co-editor of the XML 1.0 specification), articles on various applicaitons (CSS, ICE), a rumour collumn and an article on PERL and XML. Looks to be a nice online magazine. Share with: TwitterRedditEmailLinkedInFacebook

Just when I needed it, www.scripting.com pointed me to a wonderful bit of humor: http://www.ttisms.com/pjf/startrek.html: 46 Things that never happen in Star Trek. Enjoy! We just got word back that The Data Wranglers has been accepted as a a member of FileMaker Inc.’s official developer organization, The FileMaker Solutions Alliance. Yeah! Macintouch just posted an email from a PBS producer that is perhaps the most wonderful memorium to the demise of Apple’s wonderful Newton. It’s a device I wish wasn’t going away. Please check out the story. A wonderful farewell. Share with: TwitterRedditEmailLinkedInFacebook

If you work with larger FileMaker Pro Databases and have access to a MacOS computer, you might enjoy this one. FMP Field Logger catalogs the fields in a FileMaker database and shows you which fields are based on which other fields. You can find it on our goodies page. And a whoops! is in order. We forgot to mention that the project known as Bronco has been renamed Casbah because the gentleman behind Frontier thought the name Bronco sounded too much like that of his product. The preliminary web version of the Fall 1997 issue of Negations has now been posted. There should be a fully web formatted version in about a week. Share with: TwitterRedditEmailLinkedInFacebook

For those in the business of creating large websites on Mac or Windows, there’s a really incredible integrated tool called Frontier that automates much of the process using standardized templates of your design and a glossary, among other things to make publishing laarge, cconstantly changing sites with multiple authors work much simpler. Recently, an effort to create a similar package for Linux, called Bronco has been started. Share with: TwitterRedditEmailLinkedInFacebook

The Texas Poetry ListServ has grown to 20 people in the first week. We’ve been approached about starting a ListServ for people, such as musicians, who want to cut their own CDs. We’re now ready to let the curious try out a few of the databases we’re hosting on the web. One contains a list of websites. The other is a small collection of technical articles; some good, some bad, some useless. Over time we’ll improve the interface and the features. But they should give you a feel for for what you can put together in relatively short order with FileMaker Pro. If there’s interest, we might convert them into sample files. Many people have heard that Netscape has officially made its browser, like Internet Explorer, free. What’s more interesting is that Netscape will make the source code free. A group has already formed to coordinate efforts: www.openscape.org. The site has a news section and two mailing lists. Claris, the publisher of FileMaker Pro and a wholy-owned subsidiary of Apple, is being reorganized. Every one of Claris’ products but FileMaker Pro and Homepage will be absorbed into Apple, with talk rampant that a number of products will be killed. Claris has turned a nice profit for years, unlike the rest of Apple, so the move is almost bizarre, with the feel of an ’80s hostile take-over. But, why? For those of you looking for an alternative to Netscape and Internet Explorer, you might look at opera. The product is fast, small and has been rated the best alternative to the big two by at least one major publication. Versions are available for various flavors of Windows. Versions for Mac, and other operating systems, including the Amiga! Share with: TwitterRedditEmailLinkedInFacebook
